Meta Descriptions: Write Clear Search Previews for Your Services

A search preview is often a customer's first introduction to your business. If it only says "quality solutions for every need", it gives them little help deciding whether to visit. A useful meta description summarises what a particular page offers and sets an expectation the page can fulfil.

1. Understand what you can control

A meta description is a summary supplied in the page's HTML. Google may use it in search results, but can instead select text from the page that better matches a search. Different queries can therefore show different previews for the same URL. Google also does not specify a fixed description length: displayed snippets can be shortened to fit the device.

Treat your description as a suggested introduction, not text that is guaranteed to appear exactly as written. For background on choosing the purpose of a page, read our search intent guide.

2. Draft from the actual service scope

Open the service page before writing its description. Note the main service, the intended customer and one useful detail that is genuinely explained on the page. Then write a short summary connecting those points. Leave out claims about delivery speed, support hours or results unless your business can substantiate them.

For example, a hypothetical website maintenance page covering updates, backups and technical checks could use: "Website maintenance for business sites, including updates, backups and technical checks. Discuss a support plan for your website." The wording should change if the actual package includes different work.

3. Replace vague claims with useful detail

Consider this weak example: "Best company, best services, amazing results. Contact us today." It does not explain which service the reader will find. A more helpful draft for a store-development page might be: "Plan an online store with product navigation, checkout and payment integration. Explore our ecommerce development process and discuss your requirements."

These examples illustrate a writing method, not promises that should be pasted onto every page. Compare each draft with the visible content. For our own service scope, see E-commerce Development and Website Maintenance.

4. Review related pages together

Create a small worksheet with a row for each important URL, its title, its description and its purpose. Read the descriptions without looking at the URLs. Could a colleague tell which page each one belongs to? If several summaries sound interchangeable, add a relevant distinction instead of swapping only the service name.

For instance, a redesign page may focus on improving an existing website, while a maintenance page explains ongoing care. Keep the description aligned with the title; our title tag guide covers that separate part of the search result.

5. Check the published page and record changes

After updating a description, check the rendered page source to confirm the intended text appears in the description tag. A shared template can accidentally output generic text or duplicate tags. Also read the opening paragraph, because it should explain the page clearly on its own.

Record the URL, previous wording, new wording and update date. When reviewing search performance later, compare similar queries and consider changes in position, demand and device mix. A change in clicks alone does not prove that a description caused it. Avoid rewriting every summary after a single quiet day.

Start with a few important service pages and refine the process before applying it across the site. Our SEO Services can help review whether your page titles, summaries and visible content communicate the same offer.
